Organic Food & It's History

Petroleum-based fertilizers and peticides were developed after World War II (1939 - 1945).

Organic standards were developed by the USDA in 2002.  Organic certification assures quality, prevents fraud and promotes commerce.

Organic farming works in harmony with nature and avoids the use of toxic chemicals.  Organic farming includes composting and other natural techniques to produce fruit, vegetables and animals for the marketplace.   Organic farming protects citizens and the environment by disallowing toxic chemicals from entering our food, farm workers, waterways, the soil and the air.

Production of organic food does not use the following:  synthetic pesticies, genetic modification, growth hormones or antibiotics.   Additional information:  http://www.ams.usda.gov/
